Photo Ninja is a complete raw file conversion solution. In September 2012 PictureCode announced the release of their newest product, Photo Ninja. ![]() PictureCode is a software development company based out of Austin, Texas better known for their Noise Ninja noise reduction software. The result is that today we have a lot of options available to us to address the raw conversion process (one of which is the subject of this review). And, as is to be expected, software developers have noticed this trend. Most of us who take our photography seriously know this and shoot in raw regularly. It has in many ways revolutionized photography. Over hours and hours manipulating the slider adjustments of our favorite raw converter we have come to learn the power that resides in the raw file. Even at the very basic level there is white balance, contrast, tone, color correction that must all be addressed. Yet with the ability to manipulate this information to an infinite degree it all begins to get quite complicated. Seems like a relatively straight forward and simple process, right? When we demosaic a raw file we convert the rudimentary numerical sensor data from our camera’s sensor into an image file. Although I suspect this will be an unexplainable (and possibly unjustifyable) and non-negotiable premium that will result in me plodding on disappointingly with Adobe LR.įingers crossed a suitable explanation is provided because I don't mind supporting the UK's tax system with my purchases, I only object to paying tax that is really just a bonus to the company in the name of tax.Since the advent of the raw file for digital photography we have been faced with the task of optimizing the demosaic process. I will post Picturecode's response to my email so if they are able to shed light and clarify I can spread the knowledge. But in the case of software, not produced in the country of a customer, by a company not registered to pay tax in the customer's county, with no physical product to ship/import and no sales tax for US residents, I am at a loss as to how they justify this premium at 'checkout'. I realise that international price differences exist on physical products and where tax is paid in the country of the customer due to variations in percentage of sales tax and all the complexities of import taxes and the size of the market affecting numbers of units sold which has a knock-on effect. I hadn't use Noise Ninja before and therefore can't take advantage of the discount. I have tried PN for two weeks and initially held off, not because of price but because I was testing Captureone, DxO, Silkypix etc etc and then got fedup with the idea of learning a new work flow so decided to stick with LR because I wrongly thought Adobe would be quick to improve their software. I had previously read somewhere that some states do not require payment of sales tax if the person purchasing resides outside the state where the company is listed and as long as that company does not hold any physical presence in the the same state as the customer. I assume you tried it first before attempting to purchase. Hope you get it worked out as it is not cheap as is. I purchased Noise Ninja long ago, 2005, and got $50 discount. If you ever owned Noise Ninja you can get a big discount. I have purchased software from several other countries and never once has to pay any tax or fee. I am a US citizen that does not live in the state where it is sold so no tax for mine. ![]()
